Disgusting: Tell Senator Brown to ‘break up’ with Chesapeake Energy!

31 Mar

We’re shocked and disappointed to learn that Senator Brown wants to sell out his constituents to Chesapeake Energy as they destroy Ohio’s groundwater and community health for short term profits.  Brown is hosting an open house event with these community and environmental criminals.  The Senator is choosing to ignore the fact that his citizens are being poisoned, shaken by earthquakes, and forced to live with flammable tap water thanks to Chesapeake’s desire for short term profits.  And this industry is deadly for workers.  Hazardous cancer causing chemicals, blowouts, and spills are poisonous for workers with little or no protection.  Instead of demanding the industry halt all operation until they disclose the chemicals they use and violations they’ve accrued he’s apparently ok with leaving the bodies of his citizens as polluted dumping grounds.  We need to educate Brown about why this is unacceptable for Ohio.

An explosion at a natural gas compressor station in Susquehanna County this morning blew a hole in the roof of the complex holding the engines, causing a black cloud to billow from the building.

The incident in the Lathrop compressor station off Route 29 in Springville Twp. drew emergency responders from nearby counties and shook homes as far as a half-mile from the compressor complex.

BREAKING: Tim DeChristopher Moved To Isolated Confinement

BREAKING: Tim DeChristopher Moved To Isolated Confinement

DeSmogBlog

By Laurel Whitney

According to a press release sent from Tim DeChristopher’s organization, Peaceful Uprising, Tim was recently moved from the minimum security camp at Federal Correctional Institute Herlong in California to Herlong’s “special housing unit” which, in the parlance of our times, equals “the hole.”

Sources report that DeChristopher was moved there at least two weeks ago because of an investigation brought on by an unknown U.S. Congressman.

DeChristopher was sentenced to two years incarceration last July, with 3 years probation, after being convicted of two federal felonies for fraudulently disrupting a BLM oil and gas lease auction. DeChristopher was disturbed by the sale of federal lands for fossil fuel energy development and chose an impromptu act of civil disobedience to call attention to the illegitimacy of the sale.

Calling all kayakers and canoers!

28 Mar

I’m planning to kayak the length of the Cuyahoga, hopefully this May or early June, to bring regional awareness of the plans the gas industry has for us – 300 5+ acre gas wells in Geauga county alone (where I live). If you aren’t aware the the subject of “fracking”, I summarize it in the PDF (scroll down). But this isn’t just about fracking, it’s about how it came to be that the industry has managed to get where it is – by dumping money into the political process, working with states to consolidate control over drilling decisions without local input, and mis-informing the public as the the history and safety of this method of deep shale gas extraction.

For Pennsylvania’s Doctors, a Gag Order on Fracking Chemicals

25 Mar

A new provision could forbid the state’s doctors from sharing information with patients exposed to toxic fracking solutions.

Under a new law, doctors in Pennsylvania can access information about chemicals used in natural gas extraction—but they won’t be able to share it with their patients. A provision buried in a law passed last month is drawing scrutiny from the public health and environmental community, who argue that it will “gag” doctors who want to raise concerns related to oil and gas extraction with the people they treat and the general public.

Anti-Fracking Protesters Arrested at ODNR HQ

19 Mar

The following is a statement prepared by activists arrested for trying to enter ODNR to meet with public officials on March 14th.  They were arrested before even making it into the Ohio Department of Natural Resources public grounds:

We are sitting in today because John Kasich’s Division of Natural Resources (ODNR) is selling out the land and people of Ohio to the gas industry.

We are sitting in because ODNR has failed to protect our friends and neighbors whose water, air, and soil have been poisoned by hydraulic fracturing.

We are sitting in because ODNR has refused to test the toxic fracking wastewater that is being injected into over 170 wells throughout the state, even when explicitly requested to do so.

We are sitting in because we are from Youngstown, where injection wells have shaken our earth.

We are sitting in because we are from Warren, where toxic fracking wastewater has invaded our municipal water supply.

We are sitting in because we live in Cuyahoga County, where gas wells threaten the health and safety of our neighbors.

We are sitting in because we are not expendable, and we will not allow Ohio to remain a dumping ground for toxic fracking wastewater.

We are sitting in because wastewater is the Achilles’ heel of the fracking industry, and shutting down Ohio’s poisonous injection wells will slow down hydraulic fracturing operations across the Marcellus and Utica shales.

We are sitting in because we are inspired by the Lakota people who have stood up and taken direct action to stop the tar sands pipeline from destroying their land

We are sitting in because we are inspired by those West Virginians who have stood up to the coal industry put their bodies on the line to stop the blasting of the Appalachian mountains.

We are sitting in because we are inspired by our friends from Ohio and our allies from the Blood Tribe who have blockaded fracking trucks and physically resisted operations of the gas industry across the continent.

We are sitting in because we are inspired by a worldwide tradition of resistance to the destruction of extractive industries.

We are sitting in because we envision a world where corporate rule is put to rest, and communities are empowered to make those decisions that directly affect their lives.

We are sitting in because we will not be silent and we will not be bought.

We are sitting in because we can’t drink money.

We are sitting in because if we don’t, we don’t know who else will.

Hats off to John, Jonathan and Derrian, you are truly Ohio’s heroes!

And Now For Something Completely Different….

So Is This Canton’s Future?

7 Mar

Some of you may have heard me talk about the Louisiana refineries. I found an old aerial photo of Baton Rouge prior to refinery (at least prior to E. M.) Baton Rouge was built on industry, just like Canton, and that has its own negative connotations to it. But refineries happen is gas and oil rich locations.. and now we live in the middle of such a location.. so it this what Canton has in store for us?

Admittedly, these photos are not of the exact same location, and many areas of Baton Rouge are still quite beautiful. But you see my point. THIS is the product of a highly industrialized society. THIS is what we may have invited into our backyards, and our children’s’ future.

Baton Rouge present day:
